Faculty of Law Photo ID and Enrolment Verification at Macdonald Hall, Room 211 (MANDATORY).

 

Sections 5, 6, 7, 8 please report to Macdonald Hall, Room 211 between 9 am – 10:30 am.

 

Sections 1, 2, 3, 4 please report to Macdonald Hall, Room 211 between 10:45 am – 12:15 pm.

 

Breakfast will be served in the Macdonald Hall courtyard!  Meet your new classmates while you enjoy a light meal and refreshments:

Sections 5-8 at 9:00am-10:30am.

Sections 1-4 at 10:45am-12:15pm.

 

All first-year, new upper year transfer, exchange and Civil-Law-Common-Law students are required to report to Macdonald Hall to have their Faculty of Law photo taken and pick up their welcome pack with timetables, section list, and important notices. Swag bags will be distributed, along with orientation team t-shirts and wristbands!

Your workshop time and location is based on your section:

Harassment and Discrimination in Legal Education and the Legal Profession Workshop at Macdonald Hall (MANDATORY)

 

This workshop will introduce you to law students’ and lawyers’ obligations to appropriately recognize human rights in their professional environments. In particular, the workshop will address the legal framework for dealing with harassment, bullying and discrimination, the Faculty’s policies and expectations of students with respect to these topics, the Law Society’s consideration of these issues in the licensing process, and the avenues of recourse available to students who may witness or experience harassment or discrimination while at University. The workshop materials will address common scenarios encountered by law students to raise awareness and promote discussion of how this framework can be applied in concrete, familiar situations.

Meet and mingle with your new classmates, faculty and Orientation Leaders over some delicious food and games!  A tour of Macdonald Hall will also take place.

 

BBQ dinner will be served. Vegetarian/Vegan Options will be available!

9 pm- Close Trivia Night at BluMartini

 

Test your knowledge and compete with other teams at Trivia Night!  Brush up on your film and entertainment trivia while you bond with your orientation group and work together to win an amazing prize!

Day at Wolfe Island

 

Explore the beautiful Wolfe Island corn maze with your new classmates. You will ride the ferry over in groups and then take buses to the Corn Maze.  There will also be amazing games to play, such as a sand sculpture competition and a corn toss!  A cash BBQ will be available if you wish to purchase lunch.

 

Take this time to prepare for the costume party later tonight! Some great places to check out for costumes include: Phase 2, What’ll I Wear, Dollarama and The Dollar Tree  (on Princess Street), Value Village (on Bath Road). Start thinking about your costume early- bringing items from home can always be helpful!

 

Costume Party at Trinity Social

 

·       Dance the night away with your new friends at Trinity Social! Coordinate with your orientation group and leaders to dress-up in the theme of your orientation group. Get creative! Pizza will be provided at the club.

Campus Tour

 

 Your “agents” (orientation leaders) will show you around Queen’s campus and downtown Kingston!  There are lots of hidden gems to discover in your new city!

 

Boat Cruise

 

Enjoy a two-hour tour of the 1000 islands! Meet your group at Crawford Dock at 6:00pm (at the end of Brock St. right after passing City Hall). Enjoy music, hors d’oeuvres and great conversation as you experience the beautiful views of the 1000 islands surrounding Kingston. The boat will depart promptly at 6:30pm.

Games Day at Rideau Acres

 

Games day is a Queen’s Law Orientation tradition. Come out for a BBQ, followed by a day of friendly, competitive games!  Compete with your Orientation group and win a fantastic prize! Transportation is provided to and from Macdonald Hall.

 

Equity Movie Night at Macdonald Hall, Room 001.

 

·     Enjoy a movie night at the law school, complete with pizza.  Planned in conjunction with the Queen’s LSS Equity Committee. Representatives from Queen’s LSS Equity Committee will be present to tell you about how to get involved!

McCarthy Tétrault LLP Program on Ethics and Professional Responsibility Panel at Stirling Hall (MANDATORY)

 

This panel will address how good health and reflection are an important foundation for lawyers to appreciate both their ethical obligations and their duties under the rules of professional responsibility.  All legal practitioners must be continuously mindful of their ongoing need to self-assess things like conflicts, competence and their capacities in practice management.  Wellbeing, a capacity for reflection, and an understanding of how these intersect with legal professional and ethical duties are one key to both good judgement and to a longer and successful legal career.

 

McCarthy Tétrault LLP Dean’s Lunch at the University Club

 

A delicious lunch will be served immediately following the panel.  Mingle with your classmates, the Dean, faculty and other legal professionals.

Celebrate the start of classes by belting out your favourite tunes!  QL Faculty are also invited! Hang out with your classmates and professors while enjoying Tir Nan Og’s delicious finger foods.

8 pm – 12 pm Orientation Gala & Closing Ceremonies at the Isabel Bader Centre

Kick off the end of Orientation Week with a fabulous night of dancing and hors d’oeuvres!  There will be a DJ playing all the hits and a photo booth to snap some pics with your new friends. “Lawscar” awards for the winners of Trivia Night, Games Day, and Best Costume will be announced!  Semi-formal dress is suggested – wear your red carpet best!

Meet your Upper Year Buddy in person and get to know each other over a casual dinner!  Let them know how your time at QL is going so far – they will be happy to give you any advice, tips to help you adjust to your first year, and answer your questions!
